How To Use Scrivener?

Scrivener by Latte and Literature is a word processing program for Mac and Windows that offers many organizational, formatting, and task tracking features. Scrivener was specifically designed to aid nonfiction and fiction writers, screenwriters, researchers, journalists, and others. The application also allows cross-platform document creations.

While you can try Scrivener for free, one has to have a basic knowledge of any writing applications to work with it. This does not mean, one should be intimidated or afraid of Scrivener’s features. Some basic functions can be used to create documents that will be easier to understand. However, it will not be as user friendly as the other versions, which are more intuitive.

There are a few basic commands found within Scriveners that anyone can use. I describe these in the following sections. This includes instructions on how to make a file, edit a document, format documents, and manage the document, search for files, and even export an entire document as pdf.

How To Work With Scrivener?

The most simple way to work with the program is to start by choosing an application called Writer. This will give you a blank document and allow you to write. You can then go onto other more complicated sections by choosing a different application like the one that is available for Windows. In this instance, you will click a button to create a new document. After this, you will add content by clicking a button that allows you to select what type of information will be found within the document. The format will be determined by another button, and the entire process will continue until the entire document is written out.

Some tasks you can do include making the document look like a professional-looking document and adding titles, subtopics, headings, lists, headers, quotes, subheadings, and anything else you want to use in the document. You can also use the format function to add a table or two and add a table of contents. When doing so, there will be a link to the table and the bottom portion will appear blank. If there is an item you wish to insert, click on it and then click on the arrow that appears at the top.

This is like using any word processors when you have to insert text and spaces to write a quote or other form of information. This is just another way to organize information. You can also add headers, footnotes, quotes, dates, bullets, and more to make the document seem more organized.
A good place to start with Scrivener is to use the help function to find out everything you need to know. There are several great tutorials online that can help you understand the different features and how to use them. However, I found this Scrivener review article very helpful. The user interface is fairly simple to navigate, and the basics of using it are very simple.

Another great option that Scrivener provides is a feature called Export. When you create a document, you can export the document to a PDF file, image file, text file, or any other format. You can even export the entire document as a single document file. This is great if you want to make a document for yourself but are not sure how.

If you need quick access, check out the quick access feature. Here, you will open a document within Scrivener without opening it in a Word processor. Simply click a button which will bring up the options pane and then click on the buttons that will allow you to open the document in Scrivener. You can even create links between documents with the shortcut button next to each other and move from one to another as you please.

My Final Thoughts

If you already have a document open in Scrivener, you may open it in a new application by clicking on the small menu located in the top right corner. Within this section of the application, you will be able to choose where you want to save your document and then save it in any of the formats you want.

In this way, you will be able to continue working on a new project without having to create another new document. The last thing you want to do is create another file and find that you accidentally saved your document somewhere else.

If you are like many writers whose writing style comes across; it is challenging, but not impossible, to keep up with your personal writing style. Every writer has their own style and you have no choice but to adapt to it; if you want your writing to be accepted by your readers. This means you have to conform to your style to some degree. And you think to do everything on your own, you would not have any luck with your writing career.

This is where Scrivener comes in. Not only can it help you customize your documents, you can also make them read appealing depending. No doubt, you can add a lot of creativity and will help you develop different writing styles.
